Why Inviting All Friends to Like a Facebook Page is a Bad Idea

invite all friends to like a facebook page

I was guilty of this myself way back then – I would invite all friends to like a Facebook page. After studying how Facebook algorithm works, I now know it is a bad idea to do that. So don’t do it!

Why It Is Bad To Invite All Friends to Like a Facebook Page

There was a time that this was okay to do to get likes easily. They are your friends anyway, so asking a favor shouldn’t be so hard.

But the truth is, over the years, it has stopped being a good idea. In fact, I do not recommend it at all!

Here are the reasons why.

Your Friends Are Not Your Target Audience

To know why it is bad to ask just about anybody to like your FB page, we have to understand the Facebook Algorithm.

Facebook has a huge amount of data of all users. When people like a certain FB page, Facebook starts finding the commonality of interest, traits, and just about all characteristics of those who liked a page.

No Commonality of Interest

Now when you invite your friends to like your FB page, for let’s say, a hobby page,  and they oblige as a matter of courtesy, it will be hard for Facebook to really find a commonality of interest and traits, simply because it was not a natural “like”.

Facebook will start showing posts to those who liked your page. The more people react to your post, the more Facebook will show your posts to more people.

No Engagement

If your likes are more from friends who aren’t really interested in your product or page, most probably they will not engage in your Page’s posts,

And when there is no engagement, no likes or comments, Facebook will start showing it less.  They will not see your posts, nor will Facebook show it more. Which brings you to the second problem.

Dwindling Reach

When there is no engagement, your post’s natural reach will eventually dwindle. You will have lesser and lesser organic reach.

You can’t use your FB Page’s fan base to Create A Good Audience Target For Your Ads

One of the options when running an ad campaign on Facebook is to choose “people who liked your page.”

Again the commonality of traits and interests plays a huge factor in the success of running an ad this way.

Again with no commonality of interests among your friends, you cannot use this option – at least not successfully – to, let’s say, create another audience,  a lookalike audience with all the common traits, characteristics, and interests if you want to create another ad campaign targetting a different area or region.

On the other hand, if all those fans of your FB page are those who naturally like your product or service, then it would be easier to create another ad campaign with the same traits and interests but in a different area. Your FB ads will get better results.

So next time you ask your friends or random people to like your Facebook page, think twice.

Use This Marketing Strategy Instead

When you have a new Facebook page, logo, profile image, cover photo, About Section and all other sections filled out, start posting on your page.

After you have done this, you can start running ads, carefully choosing the interests of your target audience. Run it for a few days and you will see in the Facebook Insights page as to which area or age group reacted to your ads more. Then refine your ads to target better based on the Facebook Insights of your ads.

how to attract people to like a facebook page

Trust me it is much better to earn likes this way. This will contribute more to your digital marketing efforts.

Not saying you can’t invite friends to like your Facebook page.  But invite only those whom you know that will naturally be your target audience and will naturally fit your target demographics.

You then get a fan base of users who are naturally interested in your product or service.
